After being out of action for a long time, the team were all geared up for this contest.
The match encountered a problem way before kick-off, when the referee’s motorbike had broken down and was unable to make it to the field.
A player from Northern Resistance helped to kick off the game and was the timekeeper for the whole game.
With no referee, fouls were ignored and calls for offsides were unanswered. It didn’t take long for Schwarz Star to be under pressure as two corners were given away minutes after kick-off.
Soon, the Schwarzians led in a goal from a corner when Sharil, the keeper of the day, dropped a catch in front of an opponent, who took a simple shot to score. Then, a second goal was let in when the centre backs, Brandon and Satnam, had breakdowns in communication to allow the opponent to go one-on-one with the keeper, who was in no position to stop the goal.
A free kick from a foul against Schwarz Star on the right side of the field was a golden opportunity to narrow the gap. After discussion, Leon took the kick and sent the ball over the wall but slightly wide of the bottom right corner.
Once again, from a corner, the Schwarzians failed to clear and the opponents capitalised on the mistake, by sending the ball into the back of the net.
Right before half-time, a free kick was awarded to the Schwarzians slightly outside the penalty box. Yen was given the permission to take the kick and his attempt came off the crossbar and cleared by the opponents.
Half-time arrived, and the Schwarzians were 3 goals down. A team talk from captain, Ishak, followed by a team cheer helped boost morale. The formation was also changed from a 4411 to 442
The second half kicked off soon after, and changes were made. Leon was assigned to make the substitutions with Brandon now on the other end of the pitch.
The second half began well but a fourth goal came eventually for the opponents when a shot from range went straight through the raised arms of Sharil.
After several substitutions, and a short discussion with Ishak, Leon instructed the team to change from a 442 to 424 on the 75th minute, following the usage of the tactic during Schwarz Star’s game with ISCOS.
Attacking play soon improved as central midfielders Rong Shan and Yen broke down the opposition attacks. This resulted in more balls threaded to the 4 attackers and chances after chances were created but none of the chances were finished off.
The game ended soon after and amid a 4-0 defeat, lessons were learnt from this defeat and hopefully, there will be improvements.
Final Score: Schwarz Star 0 – 4 Northern Resistance
