Vipers seal title with win over Falcons

OPOD News Centre – Questra Vipers claimed the Qualifying Division crown on Saturday after a clinical 3-0 display against Schwarz Star FC. Goals from Kelvin Soh, John Yeong and Izzuan sealed the 3 points at a very wet Serangoon Stadium to end this season’s EFL Div 2 title race. The result also effectively killed off any lingering hopes of Schwarz Star claiming a promotion playoff spot this season.

At Bukit Timah Fields, in the Premier Division, CBD Wanderers stunned Club M with a 3-0 win to move 4 points clear of the bottom two to safety. Champions South Buona Vista Saints thrashed bottom side Kool N the Gang 6-0, who now looked destined for the drop to EFL’s Qualifying Division in the 2010-2011 season.

In the Qualifying Division, promotion challengers Newton Heath and Hibernians United were locked in a nail biting encounter, with the Hibs putting an end to their recent poor run of form by overcoming the Newtons 1-0 win and up to third in the table, displacing Team Orange in the process.

In Cup action, British Club First XI successfully held Happyfeet FC to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their semi-finals to progress to the final after winning 4-3 on aggregate. The Brits missed out on last year’s showpiece final which was contested between Siglap CSC and St Andrew’s but the two times winners will be looking to regain their trophy after becoming the first side this season to reach it.

Following their triumph, British Club manager James Morris lavished praised on their worthy and sporting opponents Happyfeet, insisting that their present league standing (10th in Div 2) is no justice to who they really are.

“If they are able to play like this every week they would be a credit to the Premier Division. They conducted themselves professionaly and were a delight to play against,” quipped James.

Either of Highlanders FC or Siglap CSC will make up the other team in the final.

The 3-0 thrashing by Vipers

…what happened?
Exactly the same score from the first match. It shows how vipers have been the most consistent and mature team. We are mere pretenders. Boys versus Man.

… fans saw our promising first half performance
Yes it was, I was impressed too. We were playing as a team for 15-20 mins. Players must know that individually they are not very good players, and the only way to overcome that is to play a team game. I think they underestimate the power of a team play and overestimate themselves. Its being a team that brought them the past victories and not by individual players themselves.

…then what led to the collapse?
Naivety. Immature. We have been exposed as a boy team. The inability to take a set-back. The inability to be mature. The weakness of body mind and soul.

… it sounds pretty harsh?
Not really. Because it is a fact. We did look nice and pretty and it was good. But look nice and pretty for 90 minutes. We are a pretty and nice team, but not nice to eat. We have fallen 9 times. Losing 9 times in a 20 match season is relegation material. No matter what the good press and feedback we have been getting from opponents. We lost 9 times. If we are that good a team, we wouldn’t lose 9 times. Compare that to the stability consistency and maturing of Vipers who have lost not once. And have never been seriously under threat in most of their matches. Schwarz Star surely didn’t even give them any concern in our both games.

…back to the drawing board?
No. There is nothing to redraw. The players must start to undergo a serious mindset change. They have to grow up as a team before they can be given the treatment as a serious team. If I was in a professional team, I have to hunt for new players actually. But we are not a pro team. So the players got the chance to grow instead.

Late goal seals Falcons’ first point

In an encounter against Swee Swee 1 FC, both sides ended the game with a point each. However, the Falcons should have secured all 3 points with the opportunities they had.

The game started with the opponents launching several attacks against the Falcons, and one of them was a free kick several steps behind the penalty box. A deft chip by the opponent over the wall found their player, who in turn had a go at goal. The shot was spilled by Jing Xiang and the opposing striker tapped it home. However, the effort was disallowed as he had strayed offside.

8 minutes into the game, the Falcons had their first attempt on goal. A clearance found Yang Sheng on the right flank, who in turn played it to Yen. Yen went past a man before laying it off for Yang Sheng, who fired just wide of the far post.

From that point on, the game was evenly fought out between both sides. Substitutions were carried out on the 20th minute, where Leon and Ishak went in for Yen and Satnam.

Several waves of attack launched at the Falcons’ goal was cut out effectively by the defensive pair Leonie and Dennis. There were scares for the team when the defence hesitated on several occasions, but were able to correct them quickly.

The team were incensed by the decision to award a penalty to the opponents, after Roy made minimal contact with the opponent in the box. Jing Xiang correctly dived low to his right, but the ball was just a fingertip further from him, and found the back of the net.

Peter, at the centre of the park, spotted the run of Yang Sheng and switched the ball across the pitch to him. Yang Sheng made a run down the right but lost the chance to whip a cross in as he was closed down. The equalizer soon arrived, when a free kick of a similiar distance to the one awarded to the opponent, was taken by Roy. Roy went for goal and his right footed effort nestled in the top right corner of the goal, just out of the keeper’s reach, who was at full stretch.

Instructed to harass the back four, Leon nicked the ball of the opponents twice to stop them in their tracks but were unable to take over the loose ball. He was later involved in a link up play with Leslie on the left flank. Leslie took the ball down the right but was dispossessed. Leon went for the loose ball and chested the ball before flicking a lofted pass over the defender. Leslie took control of the ball but was eventually muscled out when he was closed down by two defenders.

Another attempt on goal in the first half fell to Leon after a build-up play between Peter and Yang Sheng. Identical to the previous pass, Peter switched the ball to Yang Sheng, who made a run down the right flank. This time round, he managed to whip the cross in, and found Leon at the far post. Declining to take it first time on his stronger left foot, he flicked the ball to his right before lashing a goalbound volley. However, the timely intervention of the defender blocked the shot, and cut out the opportunity.

The last chance of the half fell for Peter, who took a volley from range that the opponent’s keeper comfortably held to. The half ended with the Schwarzians having more chances than their opponents and certainly looked to keep that up in the second half.

The second half started with the same players that ended the first half, and the opponents quickly sprang into life. A pass from their defender found their winger, who cut in and attempted a shot that went just over the bar.

More opportunities fell for Schwarz Star at the second half, when a series of passes between Peter, Melvin and Leslie brought the ball up the left flank. Leslie attempted a cross that was blocked and Melvin picked up the loose ball. He played it to Peter, who in turn played it for Leon. Leon took the ball and opted to turn his defender before taking a shot at goal. Once again, the effort was cut out by a last ditch block from the defender.

The game continued as more attacks were launched down the left flank. Leslie cut the cross behind the defense and a shot from Peter was not fast enough to threaten the keeper.

A series of substitutions were made by Coach Jason to change things on the pitch. However, right after the substitutions, the opponent found the goal. With Wan closing him down, the opponent played the ball for his left winger, who lofted a cross to the far post. A breakdown in communication between Leslie and Salehin saw the opposing player sneak in between them to fire a header in the reverse direction. The ball sailed past the outstretched palms of Jing Xiang and went in at the far end of goal.

With the risk of ending up with no points, Coach Jason went for a tactical change and played only 2 centrebacks in defence and a defensive midfielder before them to counter the opponent’s aerial threat. It was a risk that paid off as the opponents were frustrated as they resorted to long range efforts, with one bouncing off the crossbar.

Leslie had a chance to make things even again when he was released down the left. He made a run into the box and was advancing on goal when he lost his footing. On another occasion, he beat the keeper to a loose ball at the edge of the penalty box and attempted to square it to his teammates, but the ball was cleared by the opponent.

With the game nearing its closing stages, Schwarz Star had several corners. Leon took the corner and found Peter, who did not manage to get a clean header of the ball as he was knocked off balance. However, the equaliser soon arrived after that. From the right corner, Leon whipped in an in-swinging cross, a carbon copy of the previous corner he took. This time round, Peter was unmarked and headed the ball low which bounced off the ground and into the back of the net.

2-2 was the score at full time, and the team would take heart from its performance and improve on it.

With a mathematical chance that there is a possibility for Schwarz Star FC to claim the 3rd and final qualification spot..they will face their fiercest rivals Questra Vipers at teh Serangoon Stadium.

With Questra Vipers being unbeaten in the EFL and having won the reverse fixture the last time the 2 teams met, it will be a mouth watering clash as Schwarz Star FC still believes that there is hope to claim the final spot though the chances are that their destiny doesnt lie in their hands anymore. With 3 games left..Questra Vipers,Team Orange and J-Heat ..Schwarz Star FC must beat all 3 and gain maximum points to have any hope to qualify..

Speaking to schwarzstar times, Team Manager Brandon is quietly upbeat about the upcoming fixture with Vipers: ” I have spoken to my players and they know what needs to be done, with their family/friends coming  to support them..they need to stand up and be counted..I have utmost trust in my players to go all out to do their best for the fans and team-mates.”

With some of the Senior players lending their assistance to the Competitive Team playing in the D2D League, it has left the League Team alittle thin in certain areas..When quizzed by the reporter as to whether John(from Questra Vipers) will do Schwarz Star FC a favour by letting their reserves play in the clash..Team Manager Brandon replied:” John and I are friends whom do talk from time to time and we share the same passion, on the field we are both professionals as he aim to maintain the unbeaten streak in the league and for us to be the first team to beat Vipers, so John will definitely field his strongest team for the match. My Schwarzian warriors will rise up for the occasion in this titanic clash…”

With the kickoff less than 30 hours away,Schwarz Star FC’s challenge for the 3rd spot may start or even end tomorrow..to keep their dream alive..they must go for the jugular…right from the kick off…

Match Insights from Coach K against Happy Feet

SS has played against Happy Feet many times…
Yes we have, and we know who their key players are. Happy feet inflicted the 2nd most painful defeat for SS in recent times with their 3-2 win at Beatty Sec last year. And a last minute penalty for a draw a few months back. We also lost Ivan, our new signing against them, with a knee injury.

So was there any surprise?
We knew how they play and who their key men are. Am sure they know quite a lot about SS too. And they showed what they are capable of and so did SS.

It was an exciting match for spectators…
Yes extremely. Taking the lead twice with them drawing level on both occasions. When Joe scored that equalizer, I thought Happy Feet would overrun us with his energy and enthusiasm for the game. Joe would be an asset to any team with his enthusiasm for the game.

What made the difference?
Energy. The whole afternoon, I was trying to get the players to really increase their energy and enthusiasm in their game. Especially our two strikers who were languishing. They have the ability but they were not showing it in a team game. Played within themselves and were not effective at all. Based on their lack of enthusiasm in the first half display, they wouldn’t have made it to any other team.

The 2 goal hero…
I spoke personally to both Kevin and GF on their contribution during the match. I was not happy that they were not performing to the level that the team expects them to. They were not convincing. I am happy for GF for repaying the confidence I have. He broke his duck for SS with a scrappy goal against Arsenal and I am sure he would have savored both his goals against Happy Feet.

Heartbreak For Schwarz Star FC

> > >Posted by

It was a heartbreaking debut for the boys as the team kicked off their debut in the D2D 3pm Saturday League with a heavy 4-0 defeat against a rampant VNPNUS.

The team were dealt a footballing lesson as they found it hard to cope with their opponent’s route one football, finding difficulty in handling the high balls into their penalty area. Chances for the team were high and few as the opponent’s were quick in closing down spaces for the team to play their brand of possessive football. The small and uneven pitch didn’t help matters either.

The boys will hope to pick up after this defeat and promise the fans that they will be stronger for the next match.

Teamwork fundamental for success

With the D2D 3pm League starting tomorrow, schwarzstarfc.com sat down with Brandon for a pre-season interview and talks about the expectations for the Competitive Team.

1) Hello Brandon, I’m sure many of the players share your excitement for the Competitive Team’s first foray into the D2D 3pm League. What are the reasons for sending the Competitive Team into the league?

Well the decision to send the Competitive Team into a League was discussed over a period of time with both Coaches and Leonie, the team’s assistant manager. We did not look at the short term benefit but rather the long term objectives we aim to achieve for the players over time.

Friendlies were arranged to test if the team would be ready and as the Competitive Team improves with each game. Eventually, we reached a decision to send the Competitive Team in.

The other reason was that this would be a good avenue for players to maintain their level of match fitness and to gain the exposure of playing in a League. This would make the transition easier for players in the Competitive Team when called up for the League Team as they would be match fit and had practiced the SSFC Philosophy over a long period of time.

2) What is the selection policy in the D2D league? Will the block of 16+4 adopted for the League Team be used here?

The selection of players will be done by Coach Jason and his decision will be final. The players must understand that training and playing matches come hand in hand. Players who think that they can come only for matches and miss training, all I have to say is that they are very wrong.

Players need to attend training sessions held at AH field on Sunday so that Coach Jason can assess the players and draft them into his squad. Without training, it means they are unable to be assessed by Coach Jason which makes it virtually impossible for them to be selected for games.

There is a variation to the 16+4 selection policy for the competitive squad. Unlike the block of 3 games adopted by the League Team, the block of 16+4 players will be selected weekly, opening up the opportunity for players to work hard and fight for a place in the team.

3) Considering it’s the first season for the Competitive Team, what are the expectations for the team?

As this is the first season for the Competitive Team and being placed in Division 1 of the D2D League, we will be going in for the exposure and for players to have a feel of what it is like to play in a competitive league and to feel the pressure of having teams breathing down their necks for a position in the league.

The other expectation would be to allow players to apply the tactics taught by the Coaches during training in matches and play with the SSFC Philosophy in mind.

Most importantly, players must always learn from their mistakes and improve on them. As the saying goes: “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in getting up every time we do.”

4) Do you have any advice for the players participating in the league?

Go out there and enjoy the games, build an understanding with each other. It’s a long journey but as long as we stand by one another and play together as a team, we can overcome all challenges.

As one of the Sporting Legend Mr Michael Jordan says: “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” Play as a team, only teamwork can bring us to greater heights.

I would like to wish Coach Jason and his team all the best for the upcoming D2D League maiden journey.
